Pellet Stove Troubleshooting: Symptoms, Codes and Fixes
Start with what your pellet stove is doing, or the code it shows, not with a part. First rule out the stop signs: smoke in the room, a CO alarm, fire or smoke in the hopper, a stove or pipe glowing red. With any of those, turn it OFF at the controls and don’t unplug it; with a CO alarm, heavy smoke or anyone feeling unwell, get everyone outside and call 911. Otherwise, read the code and clean before you buy parts.
My rule: symptom first, part last; one reset, then a call. Every row below comes from the manufacturers’ own troubleshooting pages and links to the detailed guide.
Know your stove first. Codes and procedures change by model and generation. Harman’s classic P43 (manual R18) is not the classic, manual-ignition P61 (R10), and neither is the -C generation (P43-C, P61-C, P68-C). Englander’s classic 25-PDV (2013) is not the current 25-PDVC (SBI, 2023). PelPro’s PP130-C has its own light code. For any other brand, use its manual; never borrow another brand’s table.
When should you stop troubleshooting a pellet stove?
Rule these out before any check. The middle column is the manuals; the last is where this site goes further.
| Stop sign | What the manuals say | This site adds |
|---|---|---|
| Smoke coming into the room | Englander (both generations): don’t open the hopper or door, “DO NOT UNPLUG UNIT!!”, open the nearest outside door and windows, wait at least an hour; with the power on, press OFF and call support before restarting (an outage has its own sequence). Harman and PelPro: shut down at the controls, never by pulling the plug | Heavy smoke: next row |
| A CO alarm, heavy smoke, or anyone feeling unwell | The manuals ask for CO detectors: PelPro and Harman’s -C on every floor; Englander “highly recommends” them | Everyone outside; call 911 from there. If it costs no time, stove OFF at the controls on the way out, not unplugged. Don’t use it again until it’s been checked |
| Fire or smoke in the hopper | Harman -C: “In the event of a hopper fire: Evacuate the house immediately. Notify fire department.” Englander, smoke in the hopper: close and latch the lid and door, open windows and an outside door, press OFF, let it cool at least 3 hours without opening it, call support | Flames, or smoke that keeps building: treat it as a fire |
| Fire in the vent or chimney | Harman P43: stove OFF, call the fire department, everyone out, and an inspection before reuse. Harman -C: “If a fire occurs, call the fire department, shut down the stove, and evacuate the residence.” | Signs and steps: chimney fire guide |
| Stove or connector pipe glowing red | Englander: a unit or pipe that “glows” red or white is over-fired and “could cause a house or chimney fire.” Harman -C: “If any external part starts to glow, you are overfiring. Reduce feed rate.” | Turn it down or OFF at the controls and have a technician look before running it hard again; anything nearby smoking or scorching is a fire |
| A fuse or breaker that keeps going | Englander traces a blown 6-amp fuse to a power surge, an exposed wire, or a motor shorting or bound up, and lists replacing the fuse. PelPro traces short circuits to the board and the failed part | A fuse that blows again is a symptom: technician |
Whatever the brand, never: unplug a stove with fire or heat in it; open the hopper or door with smoke or during a power outage; jumper or disable a safety switch (“Disable safety switches” is on PelPro’s and Harman’s -C DO NOT lists); run it with the door open or panels off; test anything under power.
Pellet stove not working? Find your symptom
“Check first” means with the stove OFF, fully shut down and cool; hands-in jobs also unplugged (rules below).
It won’t run
| What you see | Check first | What the manuals list | Guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Won’t light, or unlit pellets in the pot | Burn pot and the chamber under it; dry pellets no longer than 1-1/2”; doors and lid latched | Harman P43: 5 blinks = no fire within the 36-minute start cycle (igniter on AUTO). PelPro: red 4 = missed ignition after one retry: fuel, dirty fire pot or igniter. Englander E-2: loose heat sensor, settings (start on “5” to “9”), igniter buildup. Call: an igniter that tests open or gets no power; any connection | Won’t ignite · igniter testing · burn pot overflowing · cleaning the burn pot |
| No pellets dropping | Hopper level, bridging, fines, damp pellets; lid and doors latched | Harman: low draft or an open hopper lid cuts power to feeder and igniter. Englander: the vacuum switch stops the top auger or shuts the unit off (E-1). PelPro: the feed motor needs the lid closed and the vacuum switch closed (exhaust blower running). Call: a motor that hums but won’t turn; a jam out of reach; switch testing | Auger not feeding · vacuum switch · keeping pellets dry |
| Lights, then goes out, or keeps shutting off | When it dies; burn pot, fuel, draft | Harman “FIRE HAS GONE OUT”: no fuel, low draft or a blocked flue, a fuel restriction, the lid not closed, a failed feed motor or combustion blower (the P61 adds “Power failure or blown fuse”). Englander “Unit keeps shutting down”: blocked flue (E-1), blower failure (E-3: “Check combustion blower wires, then call Technical Support”), improper installation (E-1). PelPro “Fire starts but goes out”: clean firebox, clear fire pot holes and exhaust path. Call: E-3 or red 8 coming back; anything with wires | Keeps shutting off |
| Dead: no lights, no response | Plug and breaker | PelPro “Stove plugged in but no response”, with the stove cold: unplug it, check the breaker, reset the snap disc (red button, on the feed tube, inside the stove body), look over wires, blowers and cord. Harman and Englander have a fuse on the control board. Call: a snap disc that trips again; any blown fuse (this site’s rule: it’s a symptom) | PelPro codes: router below · the power went out |
| The power went out | Door and hopper lid closed and latched; don’t unplug it | Harman: the combustion blower stops and exhaust may seep in; doors and lid stay “closed and latched… during power failures.” Englander: don’t open the hopper or door; open the closest outside door and a window; out about three minutes or less, it resumes, longer and it’s OFF. Call: smoke that won’t clear | Power outage guide · Battery backup |
It runs, but badly
| What you see | Check first | What the manuals list | Guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Little heat | Settings, burn pot and air holes, door gasket, pellets, heat exchanger, room blower | Harman “LOW HEAT OUTPUT”: “Feed rate too low,” “Draft too low because of gasket leak,” “Poor quality or damp pellets.” Englander “Lazy fire”: board settings, exhaust blower, pellet moisture (“Keep pellets inside”), excess ash (“Clean unit”), low-quality pellets | Not putting out heat · softwood vs hardwood |
| Smoke smell (no visible smoke, no alarm) | Door, glass and ash-pan gaskets; reachable vent joints; exhaust fans running | Harman: seal the vent pipe joints with silicone; “The exhaust vent is the only part of the system that is under positive pressure.” Englander “Smoke smell or dust in house”: check the exhaust connections for leaks, especially at the exhaust blower; seal with silicone, a hose clamp or aluminum tape. Call: a smell that outlasts gaskets and joints; vent repairs | Smoke smell · gaskets · vent cleaning |
| Won’t turn off; blowers run after OFF | Give the shutdown time | Normal; the P43 manual says shutdown “may take more than an hour.” A fault if pellets keep feeding, a blower runs on a cold stove, or it ignores OFF. Call: any of those | Won’t turn off |
| A blower isn’t running, or it’s noisy | Which one; dust on the room blower | Without the exhaust blower the stove can’t draft (Englander stops itself with E-1); the room blower may just be waiting for the stove to heat up (PelPro, Harman -C). Call: an exhaust blower that won’t run; motor or board diagnosis | Blower not working |
| Lazy, sooty flame; black glass; clinkers | Burn pot, pellet quality, feed or Trim setting | Harman -C: tall, lazy flames with black tails: “The feed rate needs to be reduced or the burnpot needs cleaning. Heat exchanger or exhaust blower needs cleaning.” PelPro: large lazy orange flame, black ash on the glass: clean, try another pellet brand, Trim counterclockwise; a feed motor locked on is a board fault. Call: feed that won’t stop | Reading the flame · clinkers · black glass |
| Burning pellets faster than expected | Feed or heat setting; pellet quality and moisture | Harman: “if your feed rate is too high you may waste fuel.” Englander “High pellet consumption”: low-quality pellets, or board settings (its lower buttons are factory-set: ask support) | Bags per day · cost to run · what you can burn |
| Smoke or smell on the season’s first fire | Vent cap and outside-air inlet for nests; detector batteries | A new stove’s paint cures on its first burns (Harman P43, PelPro). No manual documents it, but owners report a brief dust smell on each season’s first fire. Call: smoke in the room | Fall start-up checklist |
Is your stove showing a code? Route it by brand
| Stove | What the codes look like | Watch out for | Guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Harman P43 (classic, R18) | Status light: 3, 4, 5 or 6 blinks | 5 blinks only with the igniter on AUTO | All Harman codes · 3 blinks · 5 blinks · 6 blinks |
| Harman P61 (classic, manual ignition, R10) | 1, 3, 4 or 6 blinks | No 5-blink: there’s no automatic start to fail | Same Harman guides |
| Harman -C (P43-C, P61-C, P68-C) | 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 blinks | No 1-blink; 2 blinks = “an open feed circuit, typically from pressure switch or hopper switch”; 6 blinks after more than 25 minutes, not 50 | Same Harman guides · 2 blinks |
| Englander 25-PDV and 25-PDVC | E-0 to E-3 only, in the Heat Range and Blower Speed windows | E-1 vacuum loss, E-2 fail to start, E-3 over temperature limit; no E-4 or higher | 25-PDVC codes · Englander E1 · Englander E2 |
| PelPro PP130-C | Status light: green, amber or red | Green and amber are normal states; only red 1, 2, 3, 4 and 8 are alarms | PP130 lights and codes |
| Any other brand | Its own manual | Never use another brand’s table | — |
Why clean before you buy parts?
Most owners advise cleaning before buying parts, and the manuals back the habit with explicit instructions. PelPro’s troubleshooting opens with a Pro Tip: “Check passages to ensure they are clear of ash and obstructions. Poor airflow leads to poor stove performance.” Englander wants the burn pot and wear plate emptied before every ON. Harman’s causes for 6 blinks read like a cleaning list: a blocked flue or air inlet, fines under the burn pot, plugged burn-pot holes, dirty combustion blower blades, a fuel restriction.
It’s triage, not a law. The order of a manual’s table isn’t a frequency ranking (the only printed ranking I found is PelPro’s red 1: hopper empty “most likely,” auger jam “next likely”), and a dead stove, a blown fuse or smoke in the room skip this step. The full routine is in the deep-clean checklist.
What can you safely check yourself?
Before your hands go in: OFF at the controls, let the shutdown finish, wait until the stove is completely cool with the exhaust blower stopped, then unplug it.
| Yours | A technician’s |
|---|---|
| Hopper: fuel, bridging, fines | Any test with the power on |
| Burn pot and the chamber under it | The control board, wiring and any connection, including those named in the manuals’ tables |
| Ashes, into a metal container with a lid | Testing a pressure or vacuum switch |
| Doors, hopper lid and gaskets | Motors with no owner procedure in your manual |
| The vacuum-switch hose, by eye only (on a PelPro, behind the right side panel) | Jumpers of any kind |
| Englander’s “door ajar” port: brush or pipe cleaner, never a vacuum | Vent repairs and anything at height |
| Vent cap and outside-air inlet, from the ground | A code that returns after one reset; any stove after a fire |
Harman’s -C troubleshooting table says it “can only be used by a qualified service technician,” so this guide quotes it for orientation, not as a to-do list.
How do you reset a pellet stove?
| Stove | Reset per the manual | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Harman P43 | 5 and 6 blinks: Mode Selector to OFF, then back to your mode. 3 blinks: unplug for a few seconds and reconnect. 4 blinks: clears once the room sensor is in | Unplug only with the stove off and cold |
| Harman P61 | 1 and 3 blinks: unplug for a few seconds and reconnect. 4: clears itself. 6: no specific reset printed | Same; a 1-blink that returns goes to the dealer |
| Harman -C | 3 blinks: “disconnect power cord for a few seconds and reconnect. If error still occurs call your Dealer.” 5 and 6: Mode Selector OFF, then back. 2 and 4: clear themselves | Unplug only completely cool, with the combustion blower off |
| Englander 25-PDV and 25-PDVC | Any E-code: press ON once; if it persists, call technical support | Never shut it down by unplugging |
| PelPro PP130-C | Dial to OFF for 10 seconds, then back; or unplug for 10 seconds | Unplug only when cool, with the exhaust blower off |
One reset, once. A code that comes back is information, not a reason to keep resetting.
Advice you’ll find online that the manuals don’t back
- “Pull a wire off the limit switch, or jumper it, to test.” The DO NOT lists in PelPro’s and Harman’s -C manuals include “Disable safety switches,” and the manuals say to disconnect power before any service.
- “Letting it run out of pellets is dangerous.” Harman says the opposite: “The best way to shut down the stove is to simply let it run out of pellets.” A P43 or -C may then show 6 blinks, cleared with the Mode Selector; that doesn’t make it dangerous.
- “The vacuum switch causes 90% of problems.” No source stands behind that figure, and no manual gives percentages.
- A button-sequence “factory reset” for Englander boards. It isn’t in either manual, and the SBI manual says the three lower buttons “should not be adjusted by the user.” Ask technical support.
When should you call a technician?
- After any stop sign, and after any fire: Harman’s manuals want the venting inspected, and damaged parts replaced, before reuse.
- When a code returns after one reset on a clean stove.
- For any electrical diagnosis or connection, and any fuse that blows again.
- For motors, boards or vent repairs your manual gives no procedure for.
Use a certified (NFI) technician or your brand’s dealer or support line, with the model, serial number and manual revision at hand. I’m not an NFI technician; this guide’s line between your job and theirs follows the manuals and errs toward caution.
FAQ
What is the most common problem with pellet stoves? No manual gives a statistic. What the manuals’ troubleshooting pages and owners’ reports keep coming back to is cleaning, draft and fuel, which is why the triage tables start there.
Why did my pellet stove suddenly stop working? Read the code first, if there is one. Harman’s “FIRE HAS GONE OUT” list is a good map: an empty hopper, low draft or a blocked flue, a fuel restriction, a lid not closed, a failed motor and, on the P61, a power failure or blown fuse.
Can I troubleshoot a pellet stove while it’s running? Look, yes. Hands in only as your manual allows: Harman lets you scrape the burn pot while it burns, with the tool and gloves; PelPro wants the stove off and cold. Englander’s manual says two things on the same page: press OFF and wait five minutes before the daily scrape, and finish the whole shutdown before any maintenance. For anything else: off, cold and unplugged.
